This Sunday, 20 November 2022 is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
What is a Solemnity? In the liturgical calendar of the Roman Rite, a solemnity is a feast day of the highest rank celebrating a mystery of faith such as the Trinity, an event in the life of Jesus, his mother Mary, his earthly father Joseph, or another important saint.
Why then do Catholics celebrate Solemnities?
On March 25, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. Solemnities in the Catholic Church are celebrations that are of the greatest importance. The Annunciation of the Lord refers to the time when the angel Gabriel visited the Blessed Virgin Mary to tell her that she would be the mother of the savior.Today is the day we set aside Jesus for his special recognition. Next Sunday begins the Season of Advent..The Preparation of the Coming of Jesus, Son of God.
